I have been in the newspaper industry for 15 years. I started out as a page designer; which eventually grew to include copy editing responsibilities, then moved on to the position of special projects coordinator. Now I am the newspaper's special sections editor. It is a position I love: it incorporates my skills in page design and copy editing; and it allows me to use my strengths - organization, efficiency, collaboration - to my best ability. It has also allowed me to grow as an employee by providing opportunities to learn new skills, gain valuable leadership experience, and build relationships.I have taken on new tasks, like event planning and crafting story assignments for freelance reporters, that have honed my skills and helped me better understand the organization I work within. I have been exposed to more administrative aspects of my position - budget considerations, product deadlines, price quotes/vendors - and I have a better understanding of how my work affects other departments.I have learned that my weaknesses add to my strength as an employee. I recognize that to stay attune to my job responsibilities, I need to continually develop relationships and better understand how to interact with colleagues. I strive to meet my goals, and to take on responsibilities and tasks that will bring me new skills and experience to build my career.
