As co-owner of Renaissance Press, original publisher of the New York Times best-selling graphic novel series Amelia Rules!, Karen was involved with the day-to-day operations of the business, along with production assistance of the Amelia Rules! books. Most notably, Karen spearheaded the public relations and marketing of the series, which hit shelves amid a flurry of rave reviews and popular acclaim – no small feat for a full-color, children’s comic with a female protagonist in 2001. Success of the AR! books led to Simon & Schuster licensing the publishing rights in 2008.

Before joining the labor movement, Karen wrote, produced and edited television segments for WHTM in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania for nearly a decade. The human interest pieces focused on the local community with the goal of educating the public on issues such as history, manufacturing, and the quirky nature of South Central PA. In addition, Karen co-produced and edited Health Digest, a monthly half-hour program that provided an in-depth look at health issues in the community.
