Clinical Social WorkerNew York Presbyterian Hospital 2000 - 2002Worked on both pediatric oncology and adult HIV/AIDS floors. In ped. onc, bonded with children and supported them through difficulties of treatment including painful and uncomfortable procedures and needing to be away from home for extended periods of time. Comforted and assisted anxious and even frantic parents deeply disturbed by a new or relapsed diagnosis. Assisted entire family in the trial of surviving cancer treatment, especially for those very young but oh-so-brave children that I served. On the adult HIV/AIDS floor I connected with hard-to-reach individuals such as the isolated M.B., a man from Ivory Coast who spoke only French and had a mistrust of the system. I was able to gain his trust and in so doing opened the doors to helping him with immigration difficulties, discrimination in housing, and simply not having enough money to survive. Reached individuals with schizophrenia and drug and alcohol addiction. Helped the very ill cope with death and dying and assisted them in saying their final goodbyes with dignity and grace.

Responsible as "acting Director" of one HIV/AIDS site for 4 months and helped clear corruption and other difficulties during my tenure. Although at times it was necessary for me to be "tough" at this particular job, in general my supervisory style is quite open and gentle and supportive, preferring to nurture staff and expand on the [positives rather than rule by fear and look to the negative. I look forward to supervising again (I have also supervised two M.S.W. students) and would welcome the opportunity to transfer my vast knowledge garnered over two decades to less educated and knowledgeable staff, in a kind and supportive environment.
