Karen has over fifteen years of experience working on Peace Boat’s NGO activities to promote peace, human rights and respect for the environment through advocacy and education. She coordinates programs focused on education for peace, sustainability and social justice through experiential learning onboard the ship and in ports Peace Boat visits. She is currently working to promote action on the climate and ocean crises. She is the founder and coordinator of the Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassador Programme which brings young people from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) on the front line of the climate crisis onboard Peace Boat’s ship for capacity building and to share their experiences with government and civil society representatives that they meet in ports. Karen coordinates Peace Boat's engagement in international fora on the climate and ocean crises including the United Nations Climate Change Conferences (COPs) focusing on youth engagement. She also works on the connections between militarism and the climate crisis. Karen is working to take Peace Boat’s work to the next step through the Ecoship Project. Ecoship is the world’s most sustainable cruise ship. Sailing educational and advocacy global voyages since 1983 as a social business and Japan’s largest cruise organization, Peace Boat will use Ecoship as the platform for its future programs. A flagship for climate action and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Ecoship’s energy-efficient design maximizes renewable energies, cutting CO2 emissions by 40%. It was presented as the first Voluntary Commitment to SDG14 at the UN Ocean Conference. Ecoship will visit 100 countries yearly for sustainability education, green technology exhibitions, and oceans and climate research. Peace Boat is a Japan-based international non-governmental and non-profit organization in Special Consultative Status with the United Nations. Peace Boat seeks to create awareness and action based on effecting positive social and political change in the world through the organization of global educational programmes, responsible travel, cooperative projects and advocacy activities on a passenger ship that travels the world on voyages for peace and sustainability. The ship creates a neutral, mobile space and enables people to engage across borders in dialogue and mutual cooperation at sea, and in the ports that we visit. Peace Boat is part of the International Steering Group of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), recipient of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize.
