TeachingI think I will always have teaching as part of my life. I taught a bit in graduate school, though not very well. As an adjunct assistant professor at Madonna University, I had the great opportunity to teach a wide variety of courses from undergraduate athletic training to graduate research courses to the Taiwanese program using a translator. I now lab assist at Oakland University in the Physical Therapy Program (entry level program and the OMPT Post-Professional Certificate Program). In the clinic I try to teach patients something new or interesting everyday...or are they actually teaching me? Either way I feel we both benefit from the experience.I am fortunate to work with a variety of students in their clinical rotations. The students teach me more than they will know. I expect they feel like they have been through the wringer though as I like to ask lots of questions.TrainingMy training prepared me to work with acute on the field injuries, chronic spondylitic spines, adorable 6 year olds with leg fractures from sledding, and 90+ year olds who are struggling turning their head when driving. I have a special interest in treating conditions of the hand. I heavily rely on this sophisticated part of the body to perform in my career. I treat acute IPJ open dislocations in a collegiate baseball player with questionable base sliding technique, muscle-wasted hand following immobilization for MC fractures in a national team ice hockey player, Colles fracture in an elderly women who fell at night, and post carpal tunnel surgery patient with soft tissue scarring and radiculitis.TricksMy tricks include Kinesio-taping, McConnell taping, Chinese finger cuffs for self tractioning MP and IP joints, mid-foot supports, hanging chains from the building girder for partial loading exercises, filming patient movement using my Coaches Eye app, using red and blue solo cups for brain challenging training in conjunction with balance and coordination training,...
