  • Santa Fe Community College
    Esl Program Coordinator
Santa Fe Community College Oct 2012 - Jul 2014
    New Mexico, Santa Fe, Us
As ESL Coordinator at Santa Fe Community College, I conducted a comprehensive program evaluation and, based on that evaluation, established, pursued, and attained three main objectives. First, recognizing that the program lacked a curriculum, I instituted a program-wide use of ESL Level descriptors, which I modeled on REEP's Adult ESL Curriculum. Second, I provided teachers with ongoing options for professional development to support their use of the ESL descriptors and their development of relevant, performance-based assessments. Third, noting that ESL students had never been allowed to pay (i.e. invest) in their ESL education, I implemented a $25 registration fee for each semester, a change students supported overwhelmingly. I feel these changes were instrumental in raising teacher morale and, notably, student retention, which rose from 37% to 73% during my time in the position.
  • Santa Fe Community College
    Tesol Instructor
Santa Fe Community College 2010 - Aug 2012
    New Mexico, Santa Fe, Us
I taught for SFCC's School of Education as part of the K-12 TESOL Endorsement program, training mainstream teachers how to support English Language Learners through lesson design, instructional scaffolding, and multi-modal language instruction (drawing on Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences Theory). Courses included such topics as lesson planning, linguistics and language assessment.
  • American University
    Tesol Practitioner In Residence
    American University May 2000 - Oct 2009
    Washington, Dc, Us
During my nine years at American University, I taught graduate courses related to language teaching methods, language assessment, curriculum design, and educational materials design. My specialties included instructional technology, the teaching of pronunciation to non-native speakers of English, and language assessment.
  • Arlington Public Schools
    Instructional Technology Coordinator
Arlington Public Schools Sep 2003 - Jul 2007
    Arlington, Va, Us
At REEP (the Arlington Education & Employment Program), I served on a team of six coordinators for a large-scale adult ESL program. As the instructional technology specialist, I trained and provided ongoing support to enhance teachers' use of technology in language teaching. In addition, I managed, executed and reported on grant-funded projects. One of my favorite projects involved developing online instructional modules for low-literacy ESL students and creating a professional development website for teachers (see REEPworld.org). I supervised four employees and six computer labs.
  • Comexus Fulbright-García Robles
    Fulbright Grantee
    Comexus Fulbright-García Robles 2005 - 2006

Working with a local counterpart at Universidad Autónoma de Yucatan (Yucatan State University), I developed and implemented a new university-wide EFL curriculum serving over 1,500 students. This involved conducting a multi-campus needs assessment, developing curricular objectives, implementing placement, level, and exit exams, selecting instructional materials, negotiating teacher employment policies, and training instructors. The program now serves nearly 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students.
