About Karim Khattab

I am a 5th year Ph.D candidate working at the intersection of movement biomechanics, muscle and digital health in chronic musculoskeletal pain. I am passionate about leveraging wearable sensors and digital health tech to improve our understanding and management of chronic pain. During my Ph.D I have won an NIH fellowship, published my work in respected journals, and given award-winning podium presentations at international conferences.I was born in Alexandria, Egypt and raised in Louisiana, where I went to Louisiana State University for my bachelor’s in mechanical engineering. My love for competitive swimming – the way your form and technique affect the mechanics of your stroke – combined with my training in mechanical engineering, sparked my interest in biomechanics and human movement and eventually led me to pursue a Ph.D focused on movement, muscle, and digital health

As part of Dr. Satish Kumar's Micro Nano Devices and Systems (MiNDS) Lab at Georgia Tech, I used ANSYS simulation software to compare the thermal behavior of a ‘laser-on-chip’ used in data transfer. I presented a poster on this research and earned the award for 3rd Best Oral Presentation at the SURE research symposium. This project sparked my interest in simulation and modeling and I began to see the utility of such a tool in simulating injury and human movement.
