On Dec. 9, 2013, I graduated from the College of American Pathologists Engaged Leadership Academy. The academy was an intensive training focusing on the interpersonal, leadership, and advocacy skills needed to meet the changing health care environment. As the health care delivery system changes, so must the way physicians practice. This includes the way we interact with our colleagues, administrators, regulators and the community at large. Pathologists bring unique skills and knowledge to the health care delivery system and we need to demonstrate and articulate that in order to collaborate on improving patient care. Each of the participants was specially selected to attend the training based on their demonstrated leadership. As a member of the CAP Engaged Leadership Network, my goals will be to:• Promote pathologist physicians as experts on diagnosis, medical testing, and disease.• Develop relationships with hospital leaders and with physicians.• Develop relationships with community leaders and patient advocacy groups, as a public advocacy leader for pathologists.

A committee of the College of American Pathologists assigned:- To deliver programs, services and tools to support pathologists’ in demonstrating value through self advocacy within their practices, institutions, communities and at the state and national levels.- To advance effective knowledge exchange among pathologists and with their patients, professional colleagues and others to secure the future for pathologists and their specialty.
