Profile bio

About Karin Engstrom

I have multiple experiences and pursuits in my life.In December 1993, I moved to Seattle, where I began my career as an educator and mentor with students at Garfield High School, first through the library and then as the Career & College Specialist. I was encouraged to complete my B.A. focusing my study on the Garfield community and its environment. I continued to complete a Masters at Antioch University-Seattle in Whole Systems Design. I received my CTE teaching credential through Central Washington University. Working with young people is my passion. I love to organize and coordinate and have learned excellent collaboration skills from my students. I am a life-long learner. From 1990 - 1993, I lived in a wilderness area of the Angeles National Forest. There was no electricity except for a generator, heat and cooking by wood burning stoves and water by filling a tank with gravity feed to the house. I would do it all again. During the last year, I carried my supplies in and trash out. I lived on earth time. I was healthy. From 1987 - 1990, I managed a small campground in the San Gabriel Canyon of the Angeles National Forest. I started a recycling program that reduced the trash that needed to be hauled down to the landfills to less than half its original. Along with my ex-husband, we taught outdoor skills to campers and groups; photographed the mountain canyons; conducted hikes to nearby waterfalls and worked with scouts and community groups. In my early years, I raised six children, managed a house, worked, backpacked with the Boy Scouts, organized restoration projects after fires above Altadena, California in 1979. Helped to start the JPL Trail Builders after the restoration project. I am a tailor and seamstress, centering my designs on outdoor gear and wearing apparel. My work during that time was as a coordinator in the outpatient Orthopedic Clinic at Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles.Specialties: I practice whole systems design in my everyday living. I am an organizer and information specialist. I am a professional photographer of people, particularly my students. I love the out of doors. My strengths include listening and encouraging others to make changes in their lives, to fulfill their dreams.

Listed skills include Public Speaking, Nonprofits, Research, Community Outreach, and 26 others.
