Karin has been an environmental educator for over 40 years, with the majority of her career serving as program staff, or currently as the Executive Director, for the nonprofit organization now known as Recycling Connections (RC). Through her experiences with RC, she has gained extensive knowledge related to recycling, waste reduction, composting, solid waste, and experience in both project and nonprofit management. She was the lead project manager for Recycling Connections' contract to conduct Wisconsin's Statewide Waste Characterization Study in 2009. She has also served on numerous state and local committees related to recycling and organics management. Recently this included an appointment to the WI Department of Natural Resources' Waste & Materials Management Study Group, which she served on for three years. She has completed the Midwest Compost School program and is a Master Composter. Karin served as adjunct faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UW-SP) during the 2012-2013 academic year, and co-developed the curriculum for two separate courses that is still used to this date. She continues to serve as a guest lecturer at UW-SP, and to mentor their interns and student projects. In 2015 she received the Associated Recyclers of Wisconsin's prestigious Christy Dixon Recycler of the Year Award, in recognition of her career and her contributions to the industry. On a personal level, Karin’s passions include creating and showing her own pencil drawings, playing guitar, and traveling with family. During COVID-19 she began teaching online classes called "How to Draw a [Bird]" for grade-school children, in partnership with the local Audubon Society chapter. Local schools needed to switch to online classes, so this helped teachers with an option for both art and natural science lessons. The classes became very popular and still continue, even post-COVID.
