About Karina Ponton

I am focusing on practical and agroecological solutions to the climate, ecological and social crises we are facing. I recently finished my main role as a Woodland Adviser for the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (more below). As much as I loved my role as Woodland Adviser at Fwag for the past two and a half years, I decided to take some time to explore some other interests - including travel, writing a book (wish me luck!) oh, and learning to sail - across the Atlantic - hopefully with dozens of scientists, activists and politicians - to speak up for indigenous and marginalised communities effected by climate change, biodiversity loss and ocean acidification. I'm now giving my time and energy towards Flotilla4Change, a project organising a flotilla of boats crossing from Europe to Brazil for COP30. Our journey speaks to the essential integration of sustainable travel and intersectional communities whilst supporting a diverse range of frontline voices which must be heard at these climate negotiations. We are welcoming elected members of government, NGO delegates and front-line activists aboard any one of the ships leaving Lisbon early October 2025 bound on a three to four week crossing for COP30 in Belem, Brazil.I am also self-employed, including: course co-facilitation with Transition Together and a woodland ninja. I previously managed a project and budget for the Landworkers' Alliance to deliver forestry taster days for underrepresented and underprivileged youth. Other self-employed work includes delivering talks/workshops on agroforestry/woodland ecology, with The Rewild Project CIC and on a female/non-binary forestry team. My role with Fwag saw me advising farmers, landowners and community groups on management of established & new woodlands, woodland design, creation and facilitation, primarily under CS Higher Tier, English Woodland Creation Offer, MORETrees, Tree Health, Woodland Carbon Code, GIS, operations (1ha-150ha <>£150k), ancient woodland surveys in partnership with the Woodland Trust, partnerships, public engagement, ELMS, SFI, BNG, UKHab, FarmCarbon Toolkit, condition assessments, community projects, etc.

Other skills include: forest gardening, circular design, plant ID, water harvesting, natural beekeeping, wetland ecological treatment systems, herbal medicine, wild food foraging, setting up projects, organisational structures and animal husbandry.During the four design projects during Shift, I undertook mapping, surveying, consultations and created designs or improvement strategies for land up to three hundred acres, including woodland, wildflower meadows and freshwater habitats - this included research of these habitats and guidance on implementation. This course has had a profound impact on my understanding of what a regenerative and integrated system looks like, providing solutions for the climate, ecological and social crises and addressing social and environmental justice.
