Legislative Action Analyst
Responsible for delving into legislation to develop, report, and write summaries that provide Congressional Quarterly (CQ) with comprehensive coverage and analysis of legislation as it moves through Congress. Writes accurate and in-depth legislative summaries primarily for CQ House Action Reports and CQ Bill Analysis. The analyses describe bill provisions, provide relevant background information, gauge the measure’s prospects, summarize arguments made by supporters and opponents of major controversial bills and synthesize relevant outside analysis and information. Responsible for detailing anticipated floor amendments, among other tasks.Other responsibilities:• Develops expertise in particular policy areas and legislative procedures in both chambers.• Keeps abreast of news developments in the analyst’s policy areas, including relevant regulatory and judicial developments.• Monitors reports released by significant government and external groups, including departments, agencies, relevant industry/trade associations, the Congressional Budget Office, the Government Accountability Office, the Congressional Research Service and think tanks.• Builds and maintains a network of sources on Capitol Hill and assists colleagues in doing the same.• Provides Legislative Information team members with documents, amendments, and bill information as appropriate.• Contributes to the larger newsroom’s news gathering, and assists other newsroom personnel covering legislation, particularly bills already covered by House Action Reports or BillAnalysis.
