Profile bio

About Karisa June Hunt

I earned my Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology in the NeuroImaging Laboratory of Cognitive, Affective, and Motoric Processes at the University of Louisville in 2024. Using fMRI, I explored resilience and the factors moderating the impacts of traumatic stress on brain structure and function. My dissertation investigated the neural impacts of childhood trauma, protective factors, and trait resilience on fear acquisition, extinction, and reinstatement. In my prior research, I employed data-driven analysis to identify related neural networks involved in the suppression of emotion, memory, and motor processes. I have also had the opportunity to collaborate on research exploring the neural impacts of innovative mental health treatments. My career background as a clinical therapist allows me to bring a unique, multidisciplinary perspective to my aim of furthering our understanding of the neural basis of trauma.

Listed skills include Microsoft Word, Microsoft Office, Public Speaking, Leadership, and 6 others.

Social Service Worker — Sobriety Treatment And Recovery Team

Louisville, Kentucky

As a Social Service Worker on the Sobriety Treatment and Recovery Team (START), I served families with co-occurring substance abuse and child maltreatment in an integrated manner with local addiction treatment services. Trained as a Child Protective Services worker in family engagement, I was paired with a family mentor (a peer support employee in long-term recovery), utilizing a system-of-care and team-decision-making approach with families, treatment providers, and the judicial system. Essential elements of the START model include quick entry into services to safely maintain child placement in the home when possible, and rapid access to intensive addiction/mental health assessment and treatment. My peer support colleague and I had a capped caseload, which allowed us to work intensively with families, to engage them in individualized wrap-around services, and to identify natural supports with goals of child safety, permanency, and parental sobriety and capacity.Women in START have higher rates of sobriety than their non-START child welfare-involved counterparts (66% vs. 36%). Children in START are 50% less likely to enter out-of-home placements than children from a matched comparison group. At case closure, over 75% of children served by START remained with or were reunified with their parent(s). For every $1 spent on START, $2.22 is saved on out-of-home placement costs.

May 2017 - May 2018

Graduate Field Practicum Student

Russellville, Kentucky

I completed a 200-hour worksite field practicum for my Master of Social Work program at LifeSkills, Inc. I attended weekly supervision with my field instructor to discuss clinical strengths and areas of improvement. I actively advocated for social justice in rural communities, and I utilized evidence-based research to develop effective interventions for my clients. During my practicum, I gained further experience in conducting psychosocial assessments and facilitating group therapy sessions.During my field practicum at LifeSkills, I created and implemented a treatment program for children and adolescents with behavioral health diagnoses. This program consisted of a workbook that utilized various aspects of both Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy, which allowed clients to learn mindfulness and emotion regulation while simultaneously learning to identify and replace thinking errors.Additionally, I identified a need for mental health education at the city’s elementary school, and collaborated with my field instructor (the city’s school-based therapist) to create and facilitate a weekly social skills/social support group at the school. In this group, children gained the opportunity to learn alongside other children, to whom they could directly relate. Utilizing the extensive experience in psychoeducational group facilitation I gained while working at Rivendell Behavioral Health Hospital, I developed this program in its entirety; from consent forms to curriculum material.
