Responsibilities include advising project managers on varied planning implications with proposed developments, liaising with other key departments for input into planning submissions, undertaking EIA Screenings, and submitting local and major applications for national infrastructure, net zero renewables, flood mitigation projects etc. my role is key to delivering planning permission on time to ensure national infrastructure projects are delivered on time and in budget.

Managing my own large caseload of planning applications in Development Management, covering Listed Building Consent, Local and Householder applications. I was responsible for analysing information submitted and assessing proposals against the Local Development Plan and identifying where information was missing and requesting this from agents/applicants, or when consultees should be consulted. I also frequently undertook a role as 'Duty Planner' and pre-application advice offering a range of advice to the public and agents regarding potential development such as small scale extensions to redevelopment sites. Consistently meeting the Council's decision timescales, I ensured our team adhered to Scottish Government statutory timescale targets.

Working in the Householder and Enforcement Team, I worked through two large caseloads.Not only was I responsible for assessing planning applications but also assessing where breaches of planning law had occurred. The complex nature of the Planning Enforcement role developed my investigative and analytical skills whilst also enhancing my tact and diplomacy with various contentious stakeholders.

My first role within Development Management in the Public Sector, I was introduced to intense project management dealing with large caseloads of planning applications in a fast paced environment. My assessments and decisions were aligned with statutory deadlines and were compliant with local and national planning policies.

Aecom are a Fortune 500 company and Fortune's 'most admired company in the world'. Following selection onto the prestigious graduate scheme, I supported Senior Planners on various projects including transmission overhead line route optioneering, input into Environmental Impact Assessments and additional support for Sunderland Council creating a Masterplan document.

I was responsible for undertaking a Proposal of Application Notification for a major application for a large scale housing development in Prestonpans. I organised and lead two community engagement events advising the public about the proposed development. During the course of my role at RFA I was also taught how to analyse sites and their potential for development.

I undertook a number of tasks which included;- Researching how well the city's shop-front guidance was being implemented within its conservation areas (New and Old Town).- Giving presentations to the planning department during two training seminars to offer my recommendations.- A ‘key-view’ study to assess any developments that may have infringed the views.- Created a use-class map with which to investigate if any establishments were running under the wrong classification.- I was also involved with a new ‘Royal Mile’ project- And also present during a meeting to discuss the Forth Rail Bridge's nomination for World Heritage Site.Overall experience gained;• The ability to analyse planning conditions and recommendations and compare them to what has actually been produced. • Gained the knowledge to successfully advise clients on how to achieve planning approval (especially confident with conservation areas).• More aware of the number of conditions that can affect developments and buildings. • Gained confidence to produce successful presentations. • Experienced how professional meetings within a multi-discipline team are undertaken.• Good time keeping and the ability to work independently.
