I don’t see why there should be another large meeting held where the participants are treated as an audience, and the outcomes are merely receiving information from PPT presentations. We can do so much better than that – and we need to, if we are going to make headway against daunting issues that face organizations, and international issues that will define our future. Large meetings can be generative, collaborative and convergent. Even with a group of 500 or 5,000 you can generate new ideas, discuss them, and come to convergence around them. For the past 20 years, I’ve been designing and supporting large group meetings around the world in every possible sector of the business and non-profit/govt. worlds. And all of this design has focused on utilizing personal communication technology to enable everyone in the group to have a “voice." I have been on the front lines of developing not only the software to connect each participant in a large meeting, but much more importantly, the group processes that make that connectivity effective. The limitations on what a large group can accomplish in a meeting are no longer technical. They are only a result of limitations in design experience, vision or imagination. Depending on how much you want to know about what you can accomplish with a large group, “Don’t get me started!” – or conversely, “Just get me started!” My mission will be complete when every meeting convener who wants to know what the participants think and feel, and who wants to be able to achieve convergence and ownership with the group, has at least understood how this can be done, and that it is within his/her reach.
