Back in the mid-1990s I stuck out on my own to provide software development services for a several clients in the Midwest. I worked for a number of great companies in my hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, mostly developing custom applications in Microsoft Access. These clients were in the industries of agricultural market consulting, trucking, education systems, and social service non-profits. I also worked with CNA Insurance in downtown Chicago, and Datex-Ohmeda in Madison, later acquired by GE Medical. At Brock and Associates, I had the pleasure of working with Tim Brusnahan to develop a system of reporting on commodities futures positions. We spent the summer of 1996 working through the formulas required to accurately calculate realized and unrealized profit and loss and to report them on a comprehensive way to consulting clients.At Datex Ohmeda, I developed a system for the QA department for tracking defective materials received from vendors. This featured a web service for hosting the business logic in a middle-tier.At CNA Insurance I developed an application, in Microsoft Access, for the Treasury department to reconcile it the large number of bank accounts they had around the country.I have the pleasure of continuing this work at Nexus Consulting Group today, with many of these long-term clients as well as new ones. I am happy and proud that once I begin working with a client, I tend to stay in a relationship with them for 10 or 15 years . . . and the software I’ve developed for them keeps doing the job year in and year out.

Honda is the job that brought me to California! I flew out on the Friday before Memorial Day in 2005 had an interview with my future team members, accepted the job that day, flew back to Wisconsin, packed four boxes and my bicycle in my car, and drove to California. I've had a great experience at Honda since then. My primary activity has been maintaining and enhancing a large customer account information system written in Visual Basic.Net (win forms) and calling a middle tier written in C#. But I've also developed internal Web applications in ASP.Net and Microsoft Silverlight. Each Web project has been a joy, because each new technology has been a big step forward for Web development. Web development is slowly moving toward modularization, object orientation, and toward tools like debuggers and InteliSense that other programming environments have had for years. They sure make the developer's life easier!
