Profile bio

About Karli Barich

I have had an unconventional career path, from which borne a unique perspective. I am naturally curious, enjoy challenges and seek opportunities to learn about new topics. As a result, I have explored a variety of industries and roles that range from day-to-day operations to high-level strategic planning. I find opportunities to learn every day, from the people around me and from navigating challenges. My 13 years of experience as an extracurricular teacher for grades K-8, and later as a mentor to teachers, taught me the value and practice of enabling others, providing structure for creative minds, and facilitating teamwork through effective communication in a respectful and inclusive environment. I am a strong believer in servant leadership. After earning my BA in Spanish and Law, Societies & Justice, I became a paid lobbyist for an organization in Seattle. Intrigued by the customizability of the law, I started at a law firm and earned my paralegal certificate. In 2008, I left the law firm to help a small business navigate an IP dispute. I conducted all discovery, drafted the claim and counterclaim, acquired legal counsel, and was an integral part in the settlement negotiations. Simultaneously, I helped to position the company for its sale to a Canadian corporation by strategically developing value-added programs and restructuring its controlling ownership interests. After its sale, I stayed on to direct its office relocation, coordinated company policy updates, and led the customer service and inside sales team. Recognizing a void in the department, I quickly taught myself about CRM development and became the lead developer, trainer and analytics expert for a new Salesforce instance that involved sales teams across U.S. and Canada. All this while (1998-present), I helped grow a non-profit language education organization from a few local classes to one of the largest language schools in the Pacific Northwest. In March 2020, I directed its transition to an online environment, including the onboarding of 1,000+ students and 35 teachers. Key Career Highlights:- Developed 4 CRM systems on three different platforms (Dynamics365, Salesforce and Capsule)- Authored 3 text books, 15,000+ copies sold- Recruited, trained & managed teams of up to 40 persons (750 estimated interview count)- Planned, negotiated & managed the sale of a business of which I was a partial owner- Principal navigator of countless quick-pivotsMy Top 5 Clifton Strengths are: Learner, Achiever, WOO, Positivity and Self-Assurance.

Listed skills include Microsoft Excel, Energy Efficiency, Marketing Strategy, Community Outreach, and 9 others.

Mar 2023 - Oct 2024

Executive Director

In March 2020 when COVID-19 closed schools in Washington, I dropped all other side-projects and helped Foreign Language for Youth ("FLY") transition its in-person before/after school programming to online. At the time of shut-down, FLY had about 1,300 students, over 40 teachers, and over 130 classes from Marysville to Olympia and around the Kitsap Peninsula.During shut-down, FLY expanded rapidly to include students from over 240 schools across the United States. Its online program included curriculum in Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese and Japanese to K-8 students. When schools reopened for instruction, FLY was faced with a difficult decision. Although it saw significant interest from parents and administrators to renew classes in the schools, FLY could not find qualified and enthusiastic teachers to return to teaching in-person for short periods of time (1 hour before or after school).Market analysis (2022) indicated a drastic decrease in parental interest for online education. It was clear that FLY could not return to its pre-COVID model, nor could it sustain its online model. After many team discussions, I had to make the difficult decision to lay-off all but 3 staff in the Summer of 2022 and close FLY's online program for its remaining 300 pre-registered students. This was an especially heart-breaking moment since many of its staff and teachers I had known for years (in some cases, decades), and shared a passion to spread language and cultural awareness to young students. I am honored and privledged to have worked beside such amazing educators and administrators.FLY currently continues with a different model; providing full-day instruction to private school partners. In 2024-2025, we are excited to pilot a middle school and high school program to supplement our existing K-5 program.I continue to serve as Executive Director, in a minimal capacity, mainly to ensure regulatory compliance, manage partner relations, and financial management.
