A long-experienced engineer with particular interest/skill in OS and networking technologies. Throughout my career, I have had an interest in system and network performance and tuning, and have a pronounced knack for unusual solutions to cool problems. Now, I work with Ansys, producing engineering simulation software for Linux and Windows platforms. Keeping my part of the company ahead of the technological curve and keeping the product's capability up to par in both Linux and Windows are my general assignments.I spend quite a bit of time on open source software. For the last decade-plus, this has revolved around Xiphos, a Bible study tool homed at GitHub for which I am project lead and chief designer; Xiphos has a well-deserved reputation for a frenetic development pace involving both structural enhancement plus basic features and bugfixes. A protocol spec for multicast Bible navigation, BibleSync, has been implemented, this having offered a convenient excuse for working with my networking background. I have also worked on GNU Emacs (SysV port), XEmacs, CIPE, INN, Gnus, and many others. I do high-volume text classification with aplomb and am more fond of sed(1) than is healthy. I am the author of the first generalized anonymous mail server, a derivative of which ran on anon.penet.fi, and was personally responsible for CompuServe gaining Internet connectivity.My jobs have often included leading others, as the mentor bringing people aboard or introducing employees to new areas with which they'd been previously unfamiliar, or as project lead, guiding and scheduling design and implementation toward a common release goal.In large part, a life/career theme of mine is to Get Stuff Done. This leads to such things as the aforementioned pace in Xiphos as well as my perspectives on the need to take ideas, realize them in software, and deliver that in products.Note that I am not available for relocation, but telecommute positions can always be on the table.
