  • Community Plate
    Executive Director / Co-Founder
Community Plate Oct 2023 - Present
    Maine, United States
Expanding upon the work begun in the Maine Community Cookbooks, Community Plate is dedicated to facilitating connection and building community through a common language of food, shared food stories and recipes, and the preservation of family food histories. Our first initiative is a statewide series of in person community events called Story Sharing Suppers. These free public events bring people together in a traditional potluck supper with a twist: each attendee brings a dish, a recipe, and a story to share about what they brought. Over the course of the meal, led by an MC, and structured around story prompts, participants are encouraged to share stories and make connections. During coffee and dessert, practiced storytellers entertain guests with tales they’ve prepared in advance. In the weeks following the meal, each attendee receives a mini cookbook filled with recipes and stories for the dishes that were brought to the event to commemorate the evening and the community created.
  • Ten Apple Farm
    Co-Owner & Agricultural Ambassador
Ten Apple Farm 2005 - Present
    Gray, Maine
Ten Apple Farm, our diversified homestead and agritourism business in Gray, is a popular destination for families, individuals, or small corporate groups looking for an opportunity to experience life on a farm, spend a few hours in the outdoors with our goats, or create a more meaningful relationship to where their food comes from. Recognized by both local media outlets and national publications, our farm’s mission is education, recreation, and hospitality, on a small and very personal scale. Every week, we open up our home and farm to visitors to inspire people to believe that living agriculturally—on whatever scale they can do it—is accessible, desirable, and valuable. Even after more than a decade of leading our goat hikes, I never tire of the joy and lightening of spirit felt by our guests as they make a connection with the animals, or the farm and woods around them. • Partner in popular agritourism business with a focus on agricultural education, outdoor recreation, and hospitality. • Develop and lead educational and recreational outdoor and agricultural programming.• Coordinate business website, social media efforts, publicity, email list and newsletter.• Represent business in local, national, and international media appearances.• Lecture about the goat industry, food, homesteading, and rural living at universities, conventions, conferences, libraries, fairs, and other venues.
  • Maine Community Cookbooks
    Publisher, Creative Director, Project Lead
    Maine Community Cookbooks 2019 - Nov 2023
    Portland, Maine Area
As Mainers, if there is one thing that brings us all together, it's food. Whether we’re teaching our kids to cook family recipes, or gathered together and sharing them at the table, we know that our food traditions bring us together as a community. In 2020, as part of Maine’s Bicentennial celebration, we envisioned, funded, edited, and published The Maine Bicentennial Community Cookbook, an award-winning collection of family recipes, stories, and scholarly essays, from all 16 counties, contributed by Maine families together with well-known Maine personalities, politicians, writers, and chefs. Between the pages of heartfelt family stories and recipes are essays addressing food insecurity and inequity, Native food sovereignty, and Maine’s difficult past, but hopeful future, when it comes to issues around diversity, equity, and inclusion in our local food system. $2 from every cookbook sold is distributed to organizations fighting hunger in Maine. Leading the project, I developed partnerships and relationships across the state with governmental agencies, local businesses, media outlets, and non-profit organizations. The Maine Bicentennial Community Cookbook received extensive local and national press, critical acclaim, and sold out numerous printings. In 2021, the popular and critical success of the first cookbook fueled the creation of a sequel, Maine Community Cookbook, Volume 2, published in July 2022. Maine Bicentennial Community Cookbook is in its fifth printing with more than 13,000 books in print, and more than $20,000 distributed to hunger relief organizations in Maine. The cookbooks also led to the creation of the podcast “Cooking is Community,” which I produce, edit, and co-host.

  • The Year Of The Goat
    Co-Creator, Photographer
The Year Of The Goat 2003 - 2004
Many people dream of leaving the workday world for a life of simplicity and freedom, and Margaret Hathaway and Karl Schatz did just that. Feeling like something was missing from their city lives, the couple began to dream of an existence that was closer to the land and became captivated by the idea of themselves as... goat farmers. Realizing that they knew little about goats, and even less about farming, they gave themselves a year to explore the world of goats and decide if that was where they belonged. In THE YEAR OF THE GOAT, the reader can jump in the "goat mobile" and follow their adventures as they ditch their big-city lifestyle to trek across forty-three states in search of greener pastures and the perfect goat cheese. Part food memoir and part picaresque travel narrative, THE YEAR OF THE GOAT marries the author's twin obsessions with food and all things goat and tells the story of one couple's fascinating journey.
