Software Engineer
I am currently working as a software engineer in the IRIDE project for ESA (European Space Agency). Along with my fellow engineers I design, develop, test and implement software for monitoring the performance of the IRIDE constellation of constellations of satellites. In addition to software developement we also analyse data for quantifying the performance of the satellite system.
Software Engineer/Data Scientist - Innovation, Research & Development Team
- IoT - Sustainable Agriculture - Ambient and Soil sensors and webcams monitor crop fields and send data over wireless communication (LoRa and wifi) to a RaspberryPi gateway which is connected to the internet. Data is archived on cloud storage (ElasticSearch) and are analyzed with statistical and ML algorithms. Data can also be visualized on Kibana and RShiny dashboards. I integrated the sensors and the LoRa module with ESP32 MCU to create sensor nodes. - IoT - Health monitoring devices and Environmental Sensors. End-to-end data flow: from blue tooth enabled sensors to cloud storage.- Applying ELASTIC STACK technology (Elasticsearch, Kibana, Logstash and Filebeat) to manage large datasets.- Mirth connect integration between hospitals and laboratories using HL7 standards for data communication.- Grafana dashboards for COVID19 data visualization.
Software Engineer And Ecological Data Scientist
Completed the following projects for various clients: * Financial data analysis and visualization: Developing an application for "Quantitative Financial Trading" in Python and data visualization (interactive graphs, tables and annotations) in R Shiny* Cross platform mobile app called 'Sentinel' for citizen science data collection (Java, Javascript, SQLite on Codename1 IDE). 'Sentinel' app may be downloaded for free on Google playstore at the following link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eia.sentinel&hl=it* Web Applications: Data collection and data management servers (R Shiny web app with interface to Dropbox), interactive maps etc.
Software Engineer/Ecology Consultant (Independent Contractor)
For a tiger conservation project :• Developed an Android application for collecting data with mobile devices for a tiger conservation project. The Android application is an ODK (open source software) form and the data collected by multiple simultaneous users are uploaded to a database server hosted on KoBoCollect, a free web hosting service• Designed, developed, implemented and tested a MySQL RDBMS for the data. • Designed, developed, implemented and tested a web app using R Shiny for: data upload to the MySQL server, data visualization (interactive maps, graphs and tables), data processing (combine, split, and filter), data analysis (R-stats, R-GIS) and automatic report generation (RMarkDown).
Coordinator Of Research And Monitoring (Tiger Conservation Project)
• My primary responsibility as an ecologist was to design research methodologies (sampling design, data collection methods, appropriate statistical analysis and inference and scientific report writing) for tiger ”camera trapping” projects in tiger habitats of Assam• My secondary duties were as a software engineer to develop Android applications for data collection in the field, write R scripts to automate, data sorting especially thousands of photographs from the hundreds of cameras deployed in the forests, conduct work shops for my team and other ecologists in the organization in statistics (with R) and other quantitative methods and mathematical modeling in ecological research• The most satisfactory achievement was the automation of data sorting and processing. It saved the organization one month of manual work of three project assistants to sort thousands of photos into folders according to animal species. The R script accomplished this task with a click of a button in less than 10 minutes
Research Associate
• Worked on the movement ecology of African elephants in Kruger National Park (SA). Broadly the aim was to find the influence of fires on the foraging strategies and movement decisions of wild African elephants. All the following data processing, mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, data visualization and GIS processing were done using the R programming language• Analyzed high volume location data (~1.5 million geopoints) of fifteen GPS collared wild elephants in Kruger National Park, SA and remote sensed fire data (~7000 fire polygons) for a period of 2005 to 2012• Geo-spatial and statistical analyses included home range estimation (TLocoH and KDE), range shifts, range overlaps and range size changes in response to fires in their habitat• Time series analysis to detect cyclic patterns in elephant movement• Tested random and Levy walk models on daily distances moved by elephants• Spatio-temporal analysis of grass availability using NDVI remote sensed satellite data and correlations of fire occurrence and elephant movement• Self funded a project and collaborated with an undergraduate student in my institute and developed an infrared based elephant sensor as an early warning system and as an automatic elephant demographic data collector
Research Fellow
I researched the evolutionary ecology of tusks in elephants (title: “Sexual Selection on Elephant Tusks”). I attempted to find the processes that led to the evolution of tusks in the elephants. I also modeled the evolution of tusk-less elephants in Asian elephant populations and in the heavily poached populations of African elephants and tested predictions with empirical data. The work was a combination of mathematical modeling of elephant population genetics under natural, sexual and artificial selection, elephant population dynamics (logistic growth model with age specific harvest) and classical field work on population estimates and systematic observational study of animal behavior (Ethology). I specifically studied the role of tusks in male-male competition for mates and female mate choice in the wild elephant population of Kaziranga National Park, Assam. In addition to the scientific work on evolutionary and behavioral ecology I also created the following:• A database (MySQL) with Java GUI for individually identified wild elephants (and R for statistical analysis such as mark-recapture, population dynamics models and population parameter estimations) of the Kaziranga elephant population• Developed a software (R/Tk) for scoring/annotating (for systematic analysis of) elephant behavior recorded on video
Research Assistant
• Studied the ecology of Elephant-Human conflict in Buxa Tiger Reserve, West Bengal, India.• Tracked GPS and VHF collared wild elephants in forests along the Himalayan foothills of West Bengal.• Mapped elephant corridors between fragmented forest patches of north West Bengal.• Tested the efficacy of ’chili-fence’ as a deterrent to crop raiding wild elephants in a forest village.
Voluntary Math And English Teacher
Software Engineer
• Implemented search heuristic (A* algorithm) for a location based server to find the optimum path between source and destination addresses on ESRI road network data (C++ on Solaris)• Incorporated live traffic density information into consideration for computing optimal path in terms of travel time (C++ on Solaris)• Implemented real time traffic information display on maps delivered to mobile phones (Java).• 'Code profiled' the server to identify bottle necks and optimized the code to improve server performance (C++ on Solaris)• Designed and implemented multi-threaded data loading of ESRI road network ’shapefiles’ to reduce the 'Kivera Location Engine' server’s start up time to less than 30 seconds (C++ on Solaris)
Software Engineer
• Implemented algorithms for sorting cheques on sorter machines in banks (VC++ on Windows NT)• Designed and implemented a viewer to inspect “live” server memory using shared memory pages (VC++ on Windows NT)
Software Engineer
Implemented string processing algorithms to detect and correct “Y2K” bugs in legacy codes. I implemented some of the string search algorithms in PROLOG and others in Perl/Tk on Solaris platform
