I had Karsten in two courses, one was a lab course and the other was a studio course. Karsten demonstrated outstanding problem-solving skills in both courses despite the challenges associated with transitioning online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the studio course, Karsten worked in a team of three that was tasked with generating a proposal for a 25,000 sq ft multi-family mixed-use development on a site in Spokane's University District. Karsten was instrumental in resolving the ground floor condition and seamlessly connecting it to the larger urban context. Karsten was able to clearly communicate his ideas through diagrams using his outstanding hand sketching in combination with his high-quality computer skills. In the lab course, Karsten worked with two other students to propose innovations to a novel passive cooling system (passive downdraft cooling tower) to bring it in alignment with the needs of the 21st century. Karsten demonstrated ingenuity by proposing a tower envelope made of a gas-filled membrane that responds to ambient temperatures and changes its geometry in accordance with the cooling needs of the space it is attached to. Karsten will be a wonderful addition to any organization and I have no doubt that he will be extremely impactful and successful.
