My expertise has mainly been attained as a researcher, teacher, mentor and academic manager. Looking back I regard my years as fieldworker in Peru and many other countries (almost a ten years in total) as not only my principal professional achievement but also one of the most important experiences in my personal life. As teacher, mentor and manager, on the other hand, I've witnessed the subtle ways university politics work and learned how the struggle to gain symbolic capital in the academia shapes the relations between leaders, scholars, colleagues and students. Everybody talks about knowledge but how is it defined, obtained, distributed, managed, branded, exploited, used, recycled, and, eventually, disposed? These are the questions that I reflect on these days and that have prompted me to look for job not only inside but also outside the academia hoping that this will allow me to make use of my expertise and professional experience in new ways and settings, e.g. communication, consultancy or politics.
