About Karyn Smith
High-energy, extroverted personality wrapped up in a tiny Southern-girl package. Native to the Northeast, I went to college in North Carolina and never returned North. My husband and I moved from North Carolina in the spring of 2016 to the Willamette Valley of Oregon for better careers in the wine industry. It was an amazing 7 years of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and more Pinot Noir. We hiked, we camped, we fished. We did not find Sasquatch. After visiting our family in the Southeast last summer, we realized how much we missed home and decided to transition back to North Carolina. I enjoy cooking for friends and family. I'm a dedicated, passionate fan of NASCAR and attend races when I can. My favorite question to ask someone is "what book are you reading" because it tells you a lot more about that person than "tell me about a time..." I dress office professional and wear high heals nearly every day, though the casual Oregon culture finally got to me, so I broke down and bought Birkenstocks to wear on the weekends.

English As A Foreign Language (Efl) Teacher
The ability to take a 4 year old child into the classroom with no understanding of English and teach them English and its nuances is an experience like no other. I worked with the same 12 students for "kindergarten" five hours a day, five days a week, for two years. At their graduation, they were able to converse fluently (age appropriately) with adults in English. We read, we sang, we ate, we played, we learned, we taught. High School English Teacher
Teaching has trained me for every job I've ever had. Teacher Fact...#11 Think long and hard before you get out the glitter, *Keep it simple. The more I add to it, the more complicated it becomes, and the bigger the mess is when it goes bad.#16 Field trips are fun but involve counting, counting, counting.*Attention to detail! Parents don’t want their kid misplaced and bosses aren't happy when I've missed obvious mistakes. #18 Your most challenging student will never be absent.*My most challenging customer will be at every function I plan and likely will never be happy. I can't control that. I can control me and my reactions. #22 Your students may call you "mom" by mistake and you may answer to it.*A customer will only remember my name when I've made a mistake. When I've gone above and beyond, they'll say, "that short lady." A rose by any other name....Teacher Fact #28 The origin of "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree" can be traced directly to parent-teacher conferences.*Leadership starts at the top. If I'm having difficulties with co-workers, I take a look at how upper management treats the staff. #32 The less time you spend preparing a lesson, the more likely an administrator is to observe it.*Necessity is the mother of invention and sometimes the best ideas or actions come under pressure. #35 Your new hairstyle will be immediately noticed and judged by your students.*A customer may dislike me for any weird reason. I can’t take it personally. If possible, redirect them to a coworker, making for a better experience for everyone. #37 The day you have to be somewhere after school is the day a parent will show up to chat.*Figure out the reason for the visit and see if can I do something quickly; then explain why I can't help them now. They want to know they've been seen and heard. #47 You will have a soft spot in your heart for your most difficult student.*The customer can often be highly entertaining. Make them happy and leverage it.
