• Process development of microbial fermentation, worked within a cGMP manufacturing facility while adhering to all relevant regulations. • Successful plant trial of process improvement saved £80,000 per annum. • Identified and implemented continuous improvement opportunities for lab methods. Also authored new SOPs to standardise maintenance and operation, in addition to risk assessments to ensure the safety of others.• Prioritised workload to operate efficiently in a small technical team, while balancing multiple projects.• Ensured high standard of lab housekeeping and stock control.• Managed own workload, providing research and technical team leaders with regular updates on progress.• Regularly liaised with other departments such as, Operations, Engineering, EHS and Quality to solve problems in a safe, compliant and prompt manner.• Support production monitoring at 100,000L scale, analysing trends in data and being proactive with production issues.• Strong eagerness to learn, driving personal development and training routinely.• Experience of using SAP-based system and Power BI.
Nandoca
• Performed a variety of roles in the restaurant including hosting, waiting tables and food preparation. Also helped to welcome and train new team members.• Worked in the busiest Nando's in Glasgow grossing in excess of £12,000 on a Saturday, has developed my ability to work well under pressure both individually and collaboratively.• Working with a differing group of individuals from various backgrounds and abilities over the course of five years has developed my strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.• Maintaining a part-time job throughout my whole time at university, balancing shifts, assignments and other commitments has developed my time-management skills.
Honours Dissertation Project
• 10-week placement in the Sanz lab in order to complete research for my Honours Project. • RNA extraction, qPCR and further developed my Drosophila husbandry skills. • Performed novel work which added to the work conducted in the Sanz lab which suggests that RNAi induced knockdowns of genes in Gal80ts and GeneSwitch expression systems are irreversible, despite the current literature view that they are. This is in contrast to transgene encoding proteins which are reversible.• Improved SOP of RNA extraction which saved upwards of an hour depending on the number of samples.• Developed my skills in critically analysing literature, and interpreting and communicating my results.• Monitored stock levels and ensured good housekeeping.
Summer Research Student
• Self-organised, 10-week summer placement in the Dobson Laboratory. Self-funded by successful application for a grant.• Investigated the effect of different yeasts, sugars and the insulin signalling pathway on the lifespan of Drosophila. The results suggest slightly increased fitness from a monosaccharide carbon source, and no effect of different yeast strains.• Successfully performed triglyceride assay in which the results suggest that axenic flies have greater triglyceride levels and reduced insulin signalling than conventional flies, due to the absence of intestinal microbiota. This is in agreement with literature.• Research lab experience and developed my interpersonal skills in an unfamiliar environment. • Developed following research skills: Drosophila husbandry, making axenic and gnotobiotes, triglyceride assays, PCRs, bacterial transformations, plate spreading, aseptic technique, mid-infrared spectroscopy.• Improved glassware cleaning procedures which saved time.
