Research Intern
Research intern in the Gilbert laboratory at the University of Chicago's department of surgery. My research focused on bacterial communities associated with two ctenophore genera Mnemiopsis and Pleurobrachia. This internship taught me computational and statistical analysis skills by applying an open-source bioinformatics pipeline, QIIME (Quantitative Insights into Microbial Ecology), to my data. Through this investigation I built a solid foundation in using amplicon sequencing and molecular approaches to interrogate host-microbe relationships. I identified the bacterial genus Polaribacter as having a core associative relationship with the Pleurobrachia. Much of my work was very collaborative and I worked closely alongside post-doctoral fellows and graduate students.
Research Intern
Research Intern at Marine Biological Laboratory Ecosystems Center Field Station investigating the role of the high-marsh snail, Melampus bidentatus, on grass decomposition. This internship was my first experience in which I learned how to keep detailed experimental notes, to oversee and maintain experiments involving live organisms, and collect data and translate it into results and conclusions.
