Kasturi is a postdoctoral research associate at Flinders University. She has completed a Doctor of Philosophy (Chemistry) with a thesis title 'Vortex fluidics manipulation of nanocarbon'. Kasturi's research is developing novel fabrication methods under continuous flow using a green chemistry metrics to manipulate 2D materials such as graphene, carbon nanotubes and fullerenes to study their properties for a diverse range of applications. The aim was to reduce costs, complexity in processing methods, processing time, energy usage, minimising the generation of waste and the use of harsh chemicals and surfactants, with scalability incorporated into the science at its inception. This is destined to facilitate uptake by industry by using processing without compromising the quality of the product. Her research has gained global recognition with wide scale coverage on ABC Catalyst and BBC News. During the course of her PhD she was awarded a full scholarship to undertake a research fellowship at the National Institute for Materials Science, NIMS, Japan to investigate the local electrical properties of novel carbon nanostructures using their state-of the-art measurement facilities. She was also awarded an entrepreneurial scholarship with the New Venture Institute (NVI) at Flinders University aiming to develop entrepreneurship, innovation, business acumen, leadership and teamwork skills beyond the science. An outcome of her stint with NVI was, Splashboard a joint venture with a colleague, Laura Diment. Splashboard is the first software that uses gesture recognition technology to encourage people to create art and music, irrespective of their age, disabilities, or language. In 2016 Kasturi was awarded the Merdeka Award by the the Australia Malaysia Business Council (South Australia) Inc. and now acts as a student ambassador to strengthen the bilateral ties between South Australia and Malaysia.
