Kamloops

I work with the six health authorities under Health Canada's Drug Treatment Funding Program. My focus is on the Indigenous population given the overall health disparities between this demographic and the non-Indigenous population. My primary goal is to raise awareness about the distinct trauma experienced by Indigenous peoples via historical and current day colonization. I believe a community development approach must be taken in the redesign of substance use services for Indigenous peoples. A community led, collaborative process allows the healing to occur, which contributes to decolonization. For the system of care to deliver services in any other fashion does not just perpetuate the status quo, but actually causes additional harm.

I led regional engagement sessions with the First Nation, Inuit and Metis (FNIM) people regarding existing substance use services and supports and how well these services meet the needs of the FNIM population.I also led a project called "Welcoming Spaces" which involved consultation with the local First Nation and the formation of a local working group (consisting of Elders, community members, Councillors, artists and health authority staff). The group toured the three mental health and substance use sites in Kamloops and provided feedback on how to make them more welcoming as well as acknowledge the traditional territory that the sites are built on.
