I study precision finishing techniques using MAGNETIC FIELD-ASSISTED FINISHING (MAF) under the supervision of Dr. Hitomi Greenslet. I am currently exploring the use of magnetic tooling for complex metal parts fabricated with ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING. I characterize and functionalize surface textures for a variety of applications - improving flow conditions, mechanical properties, and cosmetic appearance.I am lab manager for the Nontraditional Manufacturing Laboratory, maintaining a safe and clean lab environment and caring for a variety of equipment including a Zygo white light interferometer, Mitutoyo surface profilometer, and various metal machinery/cutting tools.

My research concerned mechanical polishing using magnetic field-assisted finishing to polish a biodegradable medical device. I aimed to improve patient care by manipulating the surface integrity and overall structure of the device, and promote sustainability by seeking an alternative polishing method to environmentally-harsh electrolytic polishing.I used metrology techniques such as optical profilometry to identify and improve surface roughness characteristics.I successfully wrote and defended a senior thesis on this project in December 2022.

I designed and prototyped a test mechanism for an in-development DoD project. I developed test plans for wear testing on components to ensure the reliability of parts and their materials selections.I experienced and learned about test design, procedures, and rigor, as well as observed live testing take place on and off-site.

I learned the practices and standards expected of Naval research by completing a research project and presentation with a team of other interns from many different states and backgrounds under the supervision of experienced and committed engineer mentors.
