Conducted extensive studies to examine and elucidate pathogenic mechanisms involved in fulminant viral infections of animals as models of human disease. Developed and standardized assays to examine molecular processes involved in the pathogenesis and immunopathogenic processes of infection (elucidation of cellular and humoral immune response by flow cytometric methods, detection of gene regulation by microarray in response to viral infection, elucidation of cytokine response by flow cytometric bead array assay, examination of viral replication by immunohistochemistry, etc.) Identified pathological characteristics of four strains of Pichinde virus; an attenuated and virulent strain, and two reassortant viruses developed from the two naturally occurring strains.
