About Katie Askelson, M.Ed.

Howdy! My name is Katharine “Katie” Askelson. I currently serve as the Texas Mobile STEM Lab Education Program Lead for Learning Undefeated. I'm a native Texan, who spent a few years in the Midwest in Iowa. I like being active with walking and powerlifting and try to incorporate some movement into my routine every day.I gained an affection for education when I was a Teaching Assistant for a laboratory class in graduate school and I've been teaching informally ever since. I've taught in-school, after-school, day camps, and on a mobile lab. I've taught a wide range of groups and ages (Pre-K-12, college, and adults) in a variety of subjects (STEM, animal science, natural resources, etc.). One of my favorite subjects to teach is STEM. I love seeing that "Ah ha" or light bulb moment go off in a student's head as they finally understand a concept. I've been extremely fortunate to travel the entire state of Texas over the last four years teaching hands-on engineering design challenges to students. I hope to continue spreading my passion for STEM to underrepresented communities for the rest of my professional career.

Education Program Lead

Texas, United States

At Learning Undefeated I mainly act as an instructor in our mobile STEM labs, but I wear a variety of hats in the organization. I'm one of two members of the Texas Mobile STEM Labs Team where we bring STEM education to underserved areas of the state via our state-of-the-art STEM Mobile Lab. Our STEM Mobile Lab is funded by a $500,000 grant from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and allows us to travel across the state to the 20 different education regions in Texas. In this lab, I teach hands-on STEM activities to youth in K-8th. For some of the younger youth, our activities have an element of literacy as well as science and math. During our visits to schools, we are often interviewed by the media and filmed for local news stories. In addition to our mobile lab classes, we engage with the local community through community STEM Nights. So far we've engaged over 1,000 participants at these local events. During the summer months, I help with our summer camps either virtually or in person depending on the need. These summer camps take place in Texas, Louisiana, and Maryland. I help organize these camps and select age-appropriate activities for the campers who are attending the camps. In addition to running an education programs, I also help plan and administer virtual and in-person professional development to teachers regarding STEM education. My hope is to inspire more teachers to conduct STEM in their classrooms and teach more hands-on activities. We've had over 200 teachers participate in these professional developments. Part of my position requires me to conduct data entry and create reports for grant funders. For these reports, I do daily data entry and administer surveys. I turn in monthly reports to TEA and analyze data from teachers and students for our final report. I also periodically help design and create new curricula and activities for our organization.

4-H Development Director

Safe Haven Youth Ranch

Hempstead, Texas, United States

I was responsible for the development and implementation of the 4-H youth development after-school/summer programs. The youth I worked with were located at a residential treatment facility. This facility housed youth who were high-risk and had behavior issues. Youth often came to the facility before they could be placed into foster care. I managed the daily operation of the SHYR 4-H Club and Youth Farming Program. I worked to ensure that youth learn about citizenship, leadership, foods and nutrition, healthy lifestyles, veterinary science, mechanics and technology, horticulture, agriculture, and other subjects. My programs use the learn-by-doing method of instruction. In addition to offering fun projects and activities, I aided the youth in developing personal skills crucial in the youth becoming more independent.I also worked to promote Safe Haven Youth Ranch in order to fundraise for future projects. I do this in the form of traditional and non-traditional forms. I gave presentations to local Rotary Clubs, posted on social media about our upcoming projects, partnered with local businesses, and promoted SHYR at career fairs.I designed the entire youth program from the ground up and was in charge of a monthly budget. I created monthly calendars filled with youth activities and designed an entire week of field day activities for spring break. Periodically, I would take youth on field trips to art museums, a local garden, and recreational activities.
