I worked within the Service Improvement team at University Hospitals Birmingham where I supported a trust-wide project that involved working alongside a consultancy firm to increase theatre efficiency across the trust.My responsibilities included: -Identifying inefficiencies, proposing innovative solutions and implementing process change.-Ensuring that implemented processes are sustained by designing an excel-based tracker to monitor progress and identify underperforming specialties. -Regularly using MS Excel to analyse large and complex data sets that can contain up to 60,000 records across a 2-year period.-Stakeholder engagement.-Monitoring key performance indicators (including financial trajectories and the trust cost improvement programme target).-Presenting monthly updates to senior management and consultancy firm project leads at Partnership Reviews.-Identifying risks and escalating to senior management and project leads where appropriate.-Working with informatics to train staff of varying seniority on a Spotfire-based dashboard.

My role involved offering operational management support to the Haematology and Oncology directorate and providing trust-wide project support.Responsibilities included:-Leading on the completion of a seven-day service audit for NHS England.-Supporting the relocation of several specialties into a new ambulatory centre by process mapping and re-modelling inpatient and outpatient pathways. -Supporting an outline business case by investigating whether a new staffing model was cost effective.-Writing a trust-wide Standard Operational Policy in protected mealtimes.-Identifying new cost improvement opportunities such as tracking lost income as a result of incorrect coding.

I secured three weeks in the science communication department of JDRF, a charity that supports research into type 1 diabetes. I wrote short updates for the JDRF website reporting on recent research advances, designed a summer science week for children and wrote short pieces of writing summarising extensive research papers written by the scientists that the charity supports.

I worked in this National Centre for Liver Research Laboratory for six weeks investigating Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, PSC. At present this liver disease can only be treated by transplantation. Although the understanding of the disease has greatly advanced over the past years, the pathology of the disease still remains a gap in many scientists knowledge. Recently, 6 new genes have been identified at risk loci. My aim was to extract the RNA from various inflammatory mediated liver tissue and use primers to determine whether the new genes were present in the various types of tissue. At the end of my project, I will produce a report and presentation.
