Thesis title: 'Making British Citizens: The role of citizenship ceremonies in integration and belonging'. This involved extensive qualitative research, including 60 interviews with new citizens, local registrars and national politicians and policy advisors, participant observation and document analysis. Data was analysed using NVivo.I presented at numerous academic conferences, enhancing my ability to communicate research to wider audience. Working on one project for three years largely independently required excellent project management skills, self-motivation and the ability to use my own initiative.

I worked on various projects relating to citizenship, including youth citizenship, minority voting in the European elections, employer supported volunteering and online radicalisation. I was constantly balancing multiple tasks and tight deadlines. Research included finding, synthesising and summarising previous literature, interpreting and visualising statistics using Excel, employing social media as a research tool and writing reports. One of these projects – Generation Citizen – received extensive national media coverage. I also wrote funding proposals for new projects.Working for a think-tank, it was important to build connections with other stakeholders including academics, politicians and funders. I engaged with them in steering committees and meetings with individual MPs, for which I often prepared briefings. I also helped to organise events in Parliament. As head intern for 10 weeks, I had overall responsibility for eight interns. I ran inductions, organised our workload and dealt with any problems the other interns had.I co-authored a paper with my supervisor, Jonathan Birdwell, entitled ‘Tomorrow’s Citizens’. This was published in the Journal of the Association for Citizenship Teaching.
