As a postdoc, I continued to build on my doctoral studies pertaining to why genetically similar strains of HSV-1 cause varying levels of disease in the cornea. I expanded my focus in these studies to include investigating neuroimmune interactions within the trigeminal ganglion (site of viral latency) after HSV-1 infections.

Using a mouse model, I studied the functional impairment of HSV-1-specific CD8+ T cells in the trigeminal ganglion after a corneal HSV-1 infection. I additionally investigated how differences in innate immune responses to genetically similar strains of HSV-1 in the cornea can influence the development of the blinding disease, Herpes Stromal Keratitis.

As a master’s student, I transitioned to independent research and further investigated stress granule formation in host cells after infection with Mammalian Orthoreovirus and identified the specific amino acids that allow the viral scaffolding protein to associate with and repurpose stress granule components. I also investigated the role of mRNA.
