Graduate Heritage Advisor
Restoration Assistant
I work with voluntary restoration groups across England and Wales who are working towards restoring sections of waterways which are currently in a state of disrepair and are unnavigable. My job involves producing resources which help groups to persuade stakeholders that restoration adds value to an area. I have also produced an interpretation toolkit which encourages groups to think about telling the story of their waterway and making the most of the waterway in its current unnavigable state. Part of my job is to increased the awareness of waterway restoration and the plight of the waterways in the public eye.
Site Manager, Peveril Castle
I managed a team of three staff to provide excellent customer care. This involved ensuring that the site was presented to the highest standard possible. I managed the shop organising the layout and completing retail orders. I was the sub-accountant for the property managing budgets and cashing up the takings at the end of the day. Part of my role was to pay invoices and completing the Monuments Sales Return. It was my job to ensure that Peveril hit targets in retail, membership and spend per head. Part of achieving this was keeping a close eye on figures and taking action as necessary. I trained the team in areas such as customer care and safety procedures. I held personal development reviews with the staff where realistic targets were set for the year ahead. In addition I developed ideas to generate extra income and handled recruitment at the property.
Research Consultant
I worked in the North East English Heritage offices, as a research consultant. I researched the Directly Employed Labour Force. I produced the project brief, carried out desk base research and interviewed ex members of the DEL. I then compiled my findings in a report. During my time on work placement I also had the opportunity to go along on site visits for instance to Ravensworth Castle and Tynemouth Priory.
Interpretation Assistant And Chapel Guide
Gibside is a beautiful National Trust property in the North East of England, with tranquil grounds, a ruined hall and an ornate chapel. Whilst volunteering at Gibside my main role was to welcome visitors to the chapel and to answer any questions they may have had. During my time at Gibside I wrote and carried out a survey on interpretation techniques with visitors, as part of the research for my dissertation. Whilst there, I helped in the organisation of the Mary Eleanor event which involved a costumed interpreter. Also, I initiated and worked with volunteers on a photo book project about the chapel crypt showing pictures of the crypt with short descriptions.
Research Assistant
I volunteered for Staffordshire Museum Service, based at Shugborough Hall. I carried out research for an exhibition on entertainment in Staffordshire in the past 200 years, using the internet, archives and libraries. This was a very interesting project as the exhibition was for the 'Museum on the Move', an ex- library bus which moves around Staffordshire and the Black County touring schools, so space was limited.
Volunteer Excavator
Whilst studying A Level Archaeology, I volunteered with Stoke-on-Trent Museum Service with friends from college. It was hot summer - too hot for physical exertion and we were working on the excavation at the Lawn Farm Moated Site in Staffordshire. It was interesting to gain an insight into how a dig works and how tiring it can be. Initially I was working on unearthing a tiled floor; then I moved on to have my own test pit to work on. It was then that I struck gold- no not really- I found an old medicine bottle though and I like to think that it was a really important find! It certainly was a good feeling digging something up from the ground that had not seen the light of day for hundreds of years! I also worked briefly on cleaning and storing the artefacts away for future cataloguing.
