Kate MacEwan is a Senior Manager, Wildlife Biologist and International Lead for WEST, based remotely in Colorado. Over her 26-year career, she has gained extensive wildlife and environmental experience in a variety of development sectors, including mining, waste management, housing developments, and predominantly renewable energy in Africa and the USA. She manages and provides technical input for WEST’s wildlife and environmental projects throughout the Central and Southern Great Plains regions of the USA and is expanding WEST’s footprint internationally. Previously, Kate’s working experience was mostly in Africa, with most of her clients being multinational organizations, giving her a strong network of contacts in the environmental, governmental, engineering, legal, and bank lending industries. Kate has worked with the IFC’s Performance Standard 6 and the World Bank’s EHS Guideline requirements. Kate’s key strengths are her ability to think strategically while having abundant on-the-ground technical experience. She has been a key contributor to the recently released Post-construction Fatality Monitoring (PCFM) Handbook and Decision Support Tool. Released by the IFC, KfW and EBRD. Kate is also a lead and co-author on the South African Bats and Wind Energy Guidelines. Using state-of-the-art statistical principles in the design, management, and analysis of ecological field studies, WEST specializes in common sense, professional, and scientifically defensible approaches to natural resource problems facing government and industry. WEST’s core of experienced ecologists and biometricians are experts in conducting relevant ecological studies and analyzing complicated natural resource data. WEST has conducted over 4500 wildlife studies in support of wind and solar energy throughout North and South America, Israel, Africa and other regions.

Kate was the founding director of Inkululeko Wildlife Services (Pty) Ltd (IWS). IWS is a leading ecological consulting company in southern Africa, having conducted over 50 pre-construction and 10 operational long-term bat and avian monitoring studies for wind energy facilities in southern Africa. The senior IWS personnel have extensive experience in project management and fieldwork for numerous bat and faunal specialist assessments. In addition, IWS has conducted mining and wind energy work in Zambia, Namibia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
