Kate Malczewski is a Independent Educational Consultant and Owner at College Connectors. She possess expertise in educational consulting, coaching, operations management, business development, training and 11 more skills. Colleagues describe her as "In recent years, the college search has emerged as that dreaded monolythic task that parents and children alike fear. What schools will be a good fit? Will we be able to manage all the deadlines? What are they fishing for with these essays? Will we be able to even afford the schools we are interested in? There are so many decisions to make that the process can be incredibly daunting.
Thankfully, for us, the first decision we made--to hire College Connectors to guide us through the process--was clearly the best one. It was worth every penny we spent and more. In the first phase of the process, Kate took many, many weeks to really get to know our son--his quirks, his passions, and his foibles--through casual conversation and games. She generated lists of colleges that synergized with his quirky personality and urged us to check out some of the selected campuses. She proved quite flexible in the process, too. Schools on the list dropped off and appeared based on our input and his. This was a working, living document that molded and changed as we all pitched in.
Then came the grueling application schedule. We knew it would be like pulling teeth to get our son to write his application essays. We both had visions of incessant nagging leading to sullenness in the race to finish every essay. But this never happened. Kate held regular in-person and skype sessions with our son, coaching him on the writing. She managed to get him to expound on an idea (already amazing from someone who frankly says and writes little) and then guided him in sculpting the essay into something that anyone would be proud of. These essays were not flowery tomes written in someone else's voice. They were articulate writings clearly written in his voice, with his quirky personality shining through. And they were written on time, without any hassle on our part, and with no degradation to our relationship with him.
In the end, our son had the choice of several good schools. Without Kate's advice, we might never have applied to a private school, figuring we'd never be able to afford it. But he ended up getting a substantial merit scholarship for all four years to Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago, and that ulitmately is where he decided to go. We think it will be a great opportunity for him to explore a city away from home, but not too far. A place where he can come home several times a year, and to where we can go visit him as well.
I'm certain our college application experience would have been quite different had we not partnered with College Connectors. We had never heard of IIT, and even if we had, we never would have thought we could have afforded it. And, if anything, the strength of our relationship with our son grew during the application process, especially during the college visits. This would not have occured without the onus of deadline reminders falling on College Connectors, and not on us. Well worth the cost, for sure!" and "I was a client of Kate's. We worked together for a year on college applications. Kate was able to help me find ten colleges that fit my needs, ultimately placing me at a school I am very content at. Kate is full of helpful knowledge about the college process and is an excellent resource. "
