My role includes:The coating of microparticles, FPLC, good GMP and GLP practices, problem solving, documentation, attention to detail, team work, time management skills to meet deadlines and using my initiation to plan and carry out experiments.

In this role, my responsibilities included; The following of SOPs, testing in-process and final products, the use of LIMs software and the Architect instrument.

The laboratories performed throughout this Masters course were based on Immunology techniques, these included; performing ELISAs with antibodies, cell counting, SDS page electrophoresis and protein assays. I conducted a research project titled; The synthesis and investigation of Ruthenium(II) Polypyridyl complexes as Diagnostic Probes for Alzheimer’s Disease. Thus project included the following techniques; Synthesis of numerous Ruthenium(II) Polypyridyl complexes and ligands, Purification methods, Protein aggregation, Preparation of SEM and Confocal microscope slides and Spectrometry measurements; Absorption, Emission, Fluorescent Lifetime and Anisotropy.

Throughout my 4 years of studying medicinal chemistry I have had experience in laboratory skills such as: Chemical synthesis of carbohydrates and proteins, extraction processes, growth of cell cultures and fungi, working with tissue cultures, tissue sectioning, Cytoimmunostaining, Immunohistochemistry, Hematoxylin and eosin staining, protein sequencing, animal dissections and drug testing, titrations, bioassays, protein separation techniques, sterilization techniques, Western blotting, gel electrophoresis, NMR, HPLC, pipetting skills and the use of microscopes and spectrophotometers. The title of my fourth year research project was:‘The Characterization of the Cytoskeletal Structure and the determination of how focal adhesions are affected in the growth cones of neurons of the central nervous system when cultured on substrates of varying stiffness’.This project involved processes such as the synthesis, treatment and sterilization of gel substrates upon which CNS neurons were cultured upon, protein conjugation, the seeding of neurons onto the gel substrates, immunostaining processes using antibodies and dyes to characterize specific proteins of the neurons and the use of a inverted fluorescent microscope to analyze and quantify results using the software programs Image J and Excel.
