My responsibilities at this facility include providing the highest quality care and husbandry to all animals I work with. Daily duties include cleaning animal enclosures, public areas, service areas and yards, following established protocols, preparing and distributing diets for a variety of species, maintaining accurate records on animal care, and general animal husbandry. I strive to support the Zoo in our mission “to be a leader in conservation, captive breeding and animal care and to connect people with wildlife and wild places through experiences that inspire action.” This includes taking every opportunity to implement positive, professional programs, talks & tours while creating interactive learning opportunities and memorable experiences for Zoo guests. Teamwork is an essential part of this job, as well as being able to complete given tasks on my own and function with little supervision. This position is non-supervisory in nature, and was created to assist keepers with cleaning, diet prep, and shows. I am responsible for adhering to and supporting all organizational policies, procedures, and standards including those of the USDA and OSHA safety guidelines. Current average of 16-24 hours per week.

My volunteer position at CMZ is in the Monkey Pavilion. My duties at this facility include preparing and delivering animal diets, providing/maintaining fresh water, and cleaning/maintaining indoor and outdoor animal exhibit areas according to OSHA and USDA requirements. This also includes supporting all aspects of record keeping, protocols, and calendars regarding animal husbandry, training, and enrichment according to animal care management directions. I also create and deliver appropriate enrichment, including diet presentation, construction/provision of enrichment devices such as puzzles, foraging bags, and scent enrichment, or alterations to exhibits. I observe and report any behavioral or health changes, and perform minor maintenance of buildings and exhibits. I have familiarized myself with general knowledge of the zoo grounds and collections, as well as specific knowledge of the animals in my area, to provide guest engagement at animal exhibits and a friendly, courteous, and helpful demeanor to all guests at all times. My duties at this facility include using positive reinforcement to create a safe space for pets while assisting with medical exams and procedures, and use of fear-free techniques for handling and safe restraint when necessary. I am responsible for accurately calculating dosages for medications, filling and administering medications to pets, drawing up and administering vaccines subcutaneously, performing blood draws safely, administering fluids, and monitoring pets under anesthesia. Other skills include using a hand-held payment device, using a variety of software for scheduling appointments and keeping records, looking up records and entering in information, creating new entries and future appointments, obtaining client and patient information for exams, thorough education of clients on medical procedures and medications, and speaking with clients over the phone. A daily responsibility is keeping an organized and clean working environment according to AAHA standards. Average of 38-40 hours per week.

Duties include friendly and informative interaction with clients and their pets, thorough education of clients on medical procedures and medications, and occasionally speaking with clients over the phone and scheduling appointments using Avimark software. I am proficient in safe restraint of dogs, cats, birds, and small mammals for medical exams and procedures, with an emphasis on safe and efficient handling of a variety of species of birds. This includes species such as zebra finches, eclectus parrots, macaws, and injured wildlife like owls and song birds as well. I am well trained in drawing up and injecting subcutaneous vaccines, drawing blood, administering liquid and tablet medications, preparing and administering sub cutaneous fluids to cats, dogs, birds, and small mammals, and keeping an organized and clean working environment according to AAHA standards. I was also personally assigned to maintaining medications donated to the hospital, assisting with creating the work schedule, creating educational blurbs for clients and coworkers, and training new employees (seven trained as of 1-16-17).

Duties include daily food preparation for a variety of birds, reptiles, fish, and small mammals, daily cleaning and damage checks of enclosures and aquariums, general aquarium maintenance, daily health observations of each animal, and medication and care of any animal with medical needs. Daily duties also include sales of merchandise needed for proper pet care, new pets to new “pet parents”, answering phone calls and using a multi-line phone system, and answering any questions customers may have about the proper care of a pet. Non-daily duties include setting up new enclosures, safe transport of pets when necessary, and general store maintenance (restocking, running the cash register, cleaning of public areas). I was put in charge of bird care, creating enrichment and training activities for the conures that would decrease their stress level while in the store, and allow safer, more pleasant interactions with potential new families. Training exercises such as “step up” enabled the birds to interact safely with customers while keeping the bird calm and happy.

Duties include daily care for a variety of bird species including trumpeter hornbills, ground hornbills, blue and gold macaws, blue headed macaws, violet turacos, several different hawk species, falcons, seriemas, vultures, condors, African fish eagles, owls, sandhill cranes, African crowned cranes, Marabou storks, and some corvids, along with many other species. Their care included diet preparation for each bird, as well as diets for various hoof stock and small mammals, daily cleaning and damage checks of aviaries, repairing any damages found in aviaries, daily observations of each bird, creation and application of enrichment to meet needs of different species, and basic training of certain birds, including stationing, shifting, and some more complicated behaviors. I also gained hands on experience working with newly hatched birds of different species, preparing their diets, hand feeding and weaning them, and general care at different life stages of each chick. Non-daily duties included facility maintenance (garden care, patching damages in and around buildings, cleaning of public areas), and safely operating various work vehicles.

Keauhou Bird Conservation Center In Volcano, Hi

Duties include daily care of the ‘Alala, Palila, Puaiohi, Elepaio, Apapane, and Maui Parrotbill- 6 species of endangered birds native to only Hawai’i. This care included daily cleaning and damage checks of aviaries, repairing any damages found in aviaries, food preparation of up to 65 individual diets, creation and application of daily enrichment, observations and recording of notes on behavior for each bird. Less frequent duties included setting up of new enclosures, safe capture and restraint of birds for medical exams, weight checks, and application of various medications, and proper collection and running of fecal sample tests. Other duties included safe trapping and humane disposal of pests, facility maintenance (lawn care, patching damages in and around buildings, cleaning of public areas), safely operating various work vehicles, and the completion of an intern project creating an intern handbook of terms and procedures used at the facility.

Worked with birds of prey and various reptiles on their own and while teaching educational programs. The reptiles I worked with include venomous and nonvenomous snakes, box turtles, various lizards, and an alligator. The raptors I worked with include a screech owl, American Kestrels, a Bald Eagle, a Red-Tailed Hawk, a Harris’ Hawk, a Barred Owl, and a Great Horned Owl. My internship Position for the care of various birds of prey housed at the education center. Species included a Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk, Harris Hawk, American Kestrels, a Screech Owl, a Barred Owl, and a Great Horned Owl, as well as some reptiles native to the area. Daily duties included cleaning all enclosures, weighing each animal bi-weekly, preparing all meals, and safely handling and transporting both well-trained education ambassador birds and injured wildlife we were called to transport to rehabilitation facilities. I spent time each day working with the birds on a glove and training them to be comfortable during education programs at schools or public events, and performed similar duties with the reptiles. I also participated in flight training, and flight shows to help engage the public’s interest in wildlife management. I observed and recorded their behavior and their feeding schedule in a keeper’s notebook, and conducted educational programs for visitors and school groups of a variety of ages.

Duties include checking in laptops for repair, retrieving repaired laptops for return, answering phones, fixing small computer issues, assisting customers with computer questions regarding general function of the computer, helping customers use applications such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, as well as any Internet browsers, and connecting compatible technology to the school’s available wifi.

Assignment lasted from May through August and consisted of performing research on the behavior of Song Sparrows living on campus, including measuring flight initiation distances (how close a person can get before the bird flies away), setting up and taking down mist nets, removing sparrows and other species of birds from the net when caught, banding the sparrows, taking measurements of wings, bill, and tarsus for each bird, determining gender of each bird, and releasing safely once research was completed.
