About Kate Stanton

Over my long career as a nurse and now a counsellor, I have met many people who have been bereaved. From the first baby I cared for with Huntingdons Disease, I have seen first hand the grief that goes with each death, and learnt so much from those I have been alongside as they learn to live with the death of someone they love.I have learnt that grief is unique to each person, and that there is no right and wrong way to grieve - perhaps ways that are more and less helpful.I have learnt that you can't fix grief in the way we fix other events, and that often the greatest gift that you offer someone who has been bereaved is to listen to their story- "being" not "doing"I have learnt that there is no time-frame to grief - that often grief will be life-long, and that grief and living can co-exist. This goes against what many people will think - often expecting people to be "over it" and "getting on with life" in a few months. This is one of the hardest things to discover when you are bereaved.I have learnt that the emotions associated with grief are often unfamiliar and frightening and can completely overwhelm people - often prompting the question - "am I going mad?" - the answer is always a resounding "NO" - this is grief.I have also learnt the power of working with people to develop their understanding of grief. This can be life-changing for themselves and those they support - wherever that may be - in the workplace, or at home. That is why I am a Bereavement and Grief Specialist.Working as a trainer with a wide range of health professionals, I often hear the fear - "what do I say", " I might make it worse", "I don't want to get emotional", and I see the power of high quality training to reduce the fear, and enable them to step out and have those difficult conversations, and ultimately provide support that enables a bereaved person to feel heard and supported.Working with a business, I have seen how training can improve staff confidence to support bereaved staff, through Bereavement in the Workplace Training. The benefits are clear for all to see.Working as a counsellor, I continue to hear the impact of bereavement, and to hear how people are navigating this new landscape of grief, and work with them to find the right way for them.I love my work, and the opportunities it offers me to continue to learn.I love my work, delivering high quality training to spread the high quality care that makes such a difference to those who are bereaved.I love supporting people to find "the gold in grief" - it can take time, but it is always there....
