Discovery Learning Apprentice through the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Colorado Boulder. Working with members of Hannigan Air Quality and Technology Research Lab to develop and pilot a project-based learning soil quality educational program. Responsibilities Include:• Developing and maintaining the program website.• Redeveloping a semester-long project-based soil quality curriculum for high school students. • Instructing/supporting CU Boulder mentors in learning/teaching the curriculum through a position as a Teaching Assistant in CU Boulder's 'PBL in Rural Schools' course. • Maintaining the student-developed S-Pods (low-cost soil quality monitoring pods) as they are utilized in both research and educational settings.• Completing a research study, presentation, and academic paper addressing 'The Impact of a Soil Quality Outreach Program in Rural Colorado and Mongolia High Schools'.

Research assistant working in both the chemical and mechanical laboratories of the Hannigan Lab.Chemical Engineering Laboratory Work:• Responsible for running air quality filter samples through an ECOC Machine and analyzing/compiling results for individual clients. •Preparing/extracting air quality filter samples and running these extractions through a Mass Spectrometer (GCSM). Trained in hand integration of GCMS results (in conjunction with calibration curves produced through a MatLab script).Mechanical Engineering Laboratory Work• Helped convert 40 previously developed air quality monitoring pods (Y-Pods) to monitor particulate matter.• Designed and implemented six solar-powered setups to allow ambient monitoring of air quality in apple orchards in conjunction with low-cost air quality monitoring Y-Pods.•Technical skills developed/utilized include soldering, drilling, circuitry, sensor testing/colocation, etc.
