About Kate Taylor

For me, it’s all about having an impact on students’ lives. High school years can lack direction, but with a little help, students can have the confidence to go after big, ambitious goals. When students are taught to make good decisions, love learning, flexible to change, and love creating things, they always benefit, grow, adapt and add value to our world.I am an approachable, positive, enthusiastic and organised Manager, Teacher and Vocational Education Trainer/Assessor, who is committed to finding and unlocking each students’ potential every day in the classroom. Due to my exceptional communication, time management and reliability, I am able to improve and enhance students’ learning outcomes through the development of a range of engaging and interactive educational content. Through teaching in Vocational Education, High School and University settings, I have learned how to differentiate learning materials to suit the needs of a diverse range of students. By keeping materials up-to-date and relevant while also drawing on topics that students have some prior knowledge about, students are more likely to relate to the content, retain the knowledge and achieve success.

In my role as a sessional tutor for the first year accounting course, Accounting for Decision Making (ACCT1101), I prepared two hour tutorials including resources, differentiation strategies and timings for each practical activity. The course has been designed so that the focus is on the students’ learning, not focused on the tutor giving a presentation at the front of the room. I have embraced this facilitation approach by spending a small amount of time explaining the learning activity and then the majority of the two hour tutorial walking around to the groups of four, which the students have formed, asking them to explain how they got to an answer or how they are going to tackle the question before they start. I also encourage small group discussions within their groups so that students form the habit of using peer-to-peer coaching.I always prepare extra questions for high-achieving students to ensure their continued attendance and engagement. My other duties included:• Hosting consultations to assist students one-on-one with coursework • Marking student assignments and exams as per the rubric or marking guide• Developing online tutorial resources using OfficeMix.
