In July 2022, I began working at Izon Science as a Content Writer, where my main role was to write scientific articles for the company’s website and produce social media content and videos, all aimed at customers. In September 2023 I was promoted to Chief Scientist (APAC) and am now in charge of research and development in New Zealand in addition to my content responsibilities. I successfully secured funding for this MRC project grant with my principal investigators based on data generated in my previous post. I am currently continuing to investigate the impact of growth factors and other extracellular components on the inflammatory response of keratinocytes in models of atopic dermatitis.The gap between this position and my previous position was due to the pandemic and associated funding shortfalls.

During this postdoctoral research fellow post, I investigated the impact of maternal circulating extracellular vesicles on placental function, focusing on pregnancies complicated by maternal diabetes.

I undertook a BBSRC sponsored Doctoral Training Programme PhD at the University of Manchester in the Division of Developmental Biology and Medicine in the School Medical Sciences.A maternal diet high in fruits and vegetables is associated with a decreased prevalence of fetal growth restriction. This relationship remains following adjustment for known consumed nutrients and socioeconomic status, suggesting an as yet unstudied component of the diet could be contributing. We hypothesise that this component could be fruit/vegetable derived extracellular vesicles. My PhD focuses on the potential for these dietary extracellular vesicles to be absorbed in the human intestine and impact upon the growth, development or function of the fetal life support machine - the placenta.

My time as a Clinical Trials and Laboratory Research Intern was split between laboratory research into the differing miRNA profiles of intestinal cells exposed to pathogenic, commensal or probiotic strains of bacteria, and the preparation of a large diagnostic clinical trial report for the Department of Health.

As part of my BBSRC DTP PhD, I completed a 3 month internship at the popular science/science communication magazine, Guru. During this time, I was in charge of social media, authored several popular science articles, reviewed a popular science book and edited and prepared articles for publication.
