I led a hard-working team of 6 lawyers and 1 paralegal covering employment law, investigations, data privacy and cybersecurity, corporate governance, ESG, competition and consumer law issues as well as looking after Samsung's compliance program.Whilst at Samsung, I led Samsung’s defence in a misleading and deceptive conduct case against the ACCC in the Federal Court as well as a national recall program which involved managing stakeholders across the business as well as my external stakeholders the ACCC and the State Fair Trading Departments.I also led projects to improve the employee value proposition such as leading a team to redesign the reward and recognition program at Samsung; and led the change to substantially improve our parental leave policy.

Legal business partner to the Convenience Retail business providing legal support for Caltex’s franchise network, large network of property assets, wholesale supply arrangements, safety issues, corporate governance, disputes, marketing and managing external stakeholders. I built a team of 3 lawyers and worked closely with senior executives across the business as well as Corporate Affairs, Government Affairs, Company Secretariat and Risk and Compliance.

I managed the marketing legal function at Telstra supporting a client team with one of the largest marketing budgets in Australia. My team of 4 lawyers and one paralegal were responsible for the legal review of Telstra marketing and advised on the consumer law, privacy, spam and intellectual property issues for retail offers and promotions as well as all major corporate sponsorships. I helped create the Telstra Thanks loyalty program and I worked on many efficiency programs to reduce legal spend by creating client self help tools, outsourcing routine work offshore and providing know how and other knowledge tools to internal lawyers.

I managed a team of 9 lawyers supporting the fixed voice, broadband and media business with more than a billion dollar annual revenue. I provided legal support for bringing new products and offers to market covering a range of consumer law, data protection, privacy and intellectual property issues.I renegotiated the Foxtel reseller agreement, the 2011 to 2015 content and sponsorship agreements with the AFL, negotiated with vendors to procure the Telstra TBox (set top box) and acquire relevant patent rights to the TV guide and advised on all legal and regulatory content requirements for the new product.

Seconded to the IP team for 4 months. Advised different business units at Telstra on copyright, trade mark and patent issues.

I negotiated several large vendor and content agreements including a licence agreement with Sky News for the provision of all BigPond’s news content. I also assisted in the enforcement of Telstra’s exclusive sports rights including Telstra’s litigation against News Limited and Premier Media Group with respect to our exclusive NRL rights.

Advised in relation to the launch of Yahoo! Local Search in Germany and France and negotiated a content licence for Yahoo! with BT for the use of BT’s directory information in the launch of Yahoo! Local Search in the UK & Ireland. I advised several pharmaceutical clients on software licences.

Legal Counsel for Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa which involved negotiating network and services contracts, telco outsourcings, property leases and providing employment, regulatory, copyright and corporate advice to that region and dealing with disputes with customers and suppliers. This role was heavily focused on transactional work and responding to requests for tenders for both government and corporate. I negotiated the sale of Orange’s shares in its joint venture with Reuters, Radianz Limited, to Reuters in October 2004. Re-negotiated all of Orange’s commercial agreements with Radianz as a part of the sale including a multi-million pound outsourcing agreement.Advised in relation to Build Operate and Transfer projects in the Middle East and Turkey including negotiating with software and hardware suppliers. Negotiated the purchase of shares from the minority shareholders in Orange’s Egyptian entity.

Advised HSBC and Barclays in the establishment of a joint venture for the outsourcing of their cash processing functions. Acted for Lloyds TSB in the multi-million pound outsourcing of their cheque processing function. Acted for British Telecom and Yell (BT’s directories business) in the demerger of Yell. Seconded to Czech Telecom, Prague, for 6 months as legal adviser to the CFO. Worked on the potential acquisition of 49% of the shares in the largest Czech mobile phone company including advising on the capital raising via a Eurobond issue and bridge loan.

Acted for a leading Australian telecoms company in a take-over of a Malaysian mobile and Internet company. Conducted due diligence in Malaysia and advised on Malaysian telecoms regime, preparing client for discussions with the Malaysian government. Acted for Telstra in obtaining telco licences in Japan and setting up a Japanese subsidiary. Seconded to Telstra Wholesale & International Legal Directorate for 4 months where I worked on Asian points of presence strategy providing advice and drafting agreements for Asian subsidiaries and presenting to offshore staff on corporate governance.
