Social Scientist, Human Terrain SystemUs Army Jan 2013 - Feb 2014Fort Leavenworth / AfghanistanEmbedded with combat units to conduct sociocultural research in support of NATO/ISAF governance and development priorities in western Afghanistan. Focused on the perspectives, attitudes, and needs of Afghan nationals. Designed and conducted research, briefed various members of the Regional Command West staff with findings and recommendations, and published research reports. Led a first-of-its-kind Afghanistan-wide research project analyzing perspectives of Afghans about legitimacy/credibility of the 2014 elections process. Our quantitative survey of over 13,000 Afghans in every province, along with qualitative interviews with hundreds of Afghans, allowed my team to develop a highly nuanced, accurate understanding of the Afghan population's views of the evolving democratic process. Personal interviews included women in Taliban-controlled areas, semi-nomadic herders, and Afghan soldiers and officers. Conferred with the U.S. Embassy political section in Kabul, USAID, and ISAF Joint Command HQ. -
