About Kate Beckwith

I am a person who gets things done. In my current role as Director of Operations at Type Network I have led our team in accelerating the rate at which we onboard new partners and fonts by over 2000% in fewer than six months.A writer first, direct and active communication undergirds everything I do. I thrive in deadline-driven work environments where I can use my systemic and creative problem solving skills to maximize the talents of a team.I have a strong background in the design world, specifically in type and books: their histories, their production, digital font licensing, foundry management, partner contracts, royalties, communications, and marketing... everything it takes to run a modern typographic business. These skills aren't exclusive to type, though, I bring them along in my activities organizing and creating programming and educational opportunities in my community after work hours. My core motivation has always been education and I have fluency in a variety of educational settings, from the university classroom to the scrappy DIY workshop. I bring my pedagogical sensibility to my work every day.

As the first employee and primary host, during my tenure I cultivated a deep and intimate knowledge of this unique collection. I stewarded its over 30,000 items to more than 1500 visitors: design/print/book art students from area schools (CCA, SFAI, Mills, SF State, The Art Institute), design teams from major companies (Facebook, Apple, Airbnb, Pinterest, Twitter), and countless individual designers, artists, educators, calligraphers, typographers, and members of the general public.I also developed teaching strategies to train our staff in hosting visits and developed a database of collection item talking points that was used to train staff well beyond my tenure. My proudest contribution to Letterform Archive, though, is my co-curation of its very first public exhibition, Without Type: the Dynamism of Handmade Letters, which opened at the San Francisco Center for the Book in January 2016. The class included training students on letterpress and binding basics, as well as some more advanced and experimental practices; lecturing on artists' books concepts, artists, and practices, as well as other adjacent and influencing time-based art forms such as video and performance; leading seminar conversations on class readings, and leading peer critiques of student projects. Students produced 3 small editions over the course of the semester as well as a handful of smaller print projects. My teaching approach is quite interdisciplinary, drawing inspiration from the history of book production as well as more surprising sources outside of typography and book design. Practically this involves a blend of lecture and presentation, group discussion, hands-on studio class time, direct one-on-one training sessions, and collaborative activities wherein students share their knowledge and skills with one another.
