She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Spalding University and is the author of A Wild Region (Moon Tide Press), named a Midwest Book Review Selection, and Follow Me Down (Tebot Bach).A four-time Pushcart Prize nominee, Kate's awards include a Gabehart Prize and the North American Review's James Hearst Poetry Prize. Her short story, "The Gods of Flight," was shortlisted for the Bridport Prize. Kate is also Poet Laureate Emerita of Laguna Beach, California. As the first Poet Laureate of Laguna Beach, her platform included serving as a brand ambassador for the literary arts—creating content, performing readings, teaching workshops and classes, and creating, coordinating, and leading Laguna Beach's first ever literary festival. She also created and produced a Poet Laureate's Showcase Series, bringing nationally known poets and writers to Laguna Beach.Also a classically trained artist, working primarily in acrylics and mixed media collage, Kate explores subject matter ranging from mythology to philosophical quandaries of the modern age.
