Senior Lecturer
My research is in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), investigating how people interact with and react to technology, to understand how emerging and future technologies will affect us and the society in which we live. I currently focus on cognition, sex, gender and sexuality and how these might be incorporated into cognitive systems such as sexual companion robots.In 2017 I was selected as one of the Humans of the Year by Motherboard, Vice Media’s Technology channel, and was named as one of London’s Most Influential People 2017 by the Evening Standard’s Progress1000 list.In 2016 I was Co-Chair of the Second International Congress on Love and Sex with Robots and I founded the UK’s first sex tech hackathon. My book, “Turned On: The Science of the Sex Robot”, will be published by Bloomsbury in 2018.

My role involves research, teaching and academic administration in a multidisciplinary environment. My research focuses on AI and HCI, including visual perception. I am Senior Tutor in my department, responsible for the pastoral welfare of all taught students.
Post-Doctoral Research Associate In Archaeology
This role included research in computing for archaeology – images and archiving; representations of archaeological sites and artefacts. In 2005 I was responsible for coordination of the Phase 1 pilot project of Archive Archaeology, part of the HECFE FDTL5 funded Access Archaeology project. In 2004 I carried out the digital archiving of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s papers, part of the University’s Special Collection. This was an AHRB-funded pilot project to catalogue and digitally preserve the Brunel Collection for online delivery. I also delivered postgraduate and undergraduate teaching.
Archaeologist
Employed full-time on a number of excavations in Ireland. Fixed term contract work with Archaeological Development Services Ltd., Margaret Gowen and Co. Ltd., North- ern Archaeological Consultancy Ltd., and ArchCor Ltd. Sites included Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Viking, Medieval and Post-Medieval. Duties included excavation, surveying, recording, photography, report writing, technical drawing, library-based research, data analysis.
