About Kate E. Fletcher, Ma
Have you ever heard of a social worker marketer? Well, that's probably because it's not a "normal" path. I started describing myself that way when I realized how unusual it was to have roots in both social work and marketing, communications, and public relations. Defining myself this way has helped me feel empowered and own my different perspective, instead of feeling like I don't belong. It's true that I originally thought I'd take the typical social work path - putting people first and empowering people that are considered the most vulnerable in our communities. In my undergrad, I joined a sorority (ADPi) when I was blown away by the impact the girls were making on the school and community. They inspired me to go after a leadership role, one that I thought was the closest thing to social work - Philanthropy Chair. Little did I know that would completely alter my career trajectory. Falling in love with fundraising events, volunteer work, nonprofits, and health care was easy. I finally understood the saying that it doesn't feel like work if it is something you love. When I landed my first paid full-time development/philanthropy job in 2016, I was also handed all of the marketing, communications, and public relations responsibilities. I thought I was there just to take care of it until someone better came along, until our CEO made it clear to me that I had a real future in this work.Fast forward 7+ years and that is still one of the most pivotal moments in my career. I will never take for granted the people that have empowered me to use my voice and talents in marketing, communications, and public relations. Empowering and supporting people has taken on a whole new meaning for me because it can be done when they trust your brand, connect with your values, and feel like you have their best interest in mind when helping them find resources or share their story during vulnerable times.I now get to spend my days seeing how people and problem-solving skills, as well as great creativity, written and verbal communication, and detail-oriented skills combine to give me a strength-based approach to my profession. Having experience on small teams at local St. Louis nonprofits, I've had the opportunity to have my hands in just about everything, but I must admit that branding has become one of my biggest passions. After all, I do think there is a lot of truth in saying that people may forget what you said or did, but not how you made them feel.
