About Kate E. Gerber
Hi, I'm Kate. I'm a current student and member of the University Honors Program at the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities (Go Gophers!) studying Environmental Science, Policy, and Management with minors in corporate environmental management and supply chain and operations management. After graduation, I hope to enter the corporate sustainability sphere and work with companies to decrease carbon emissions to work towards a climate neutral world. Through my education, I aim to create a holistic understanding of environmental science, corporate environmental management, supply chain operations and the business world as a whole so that I can hit the ground running after graduation. To best prepare for these post-grad experiences, I have gained experience in a variety of sustainability related fields. I worked as an Environmental Sustainability Intern at AbbVie, a Fortune 100 company, where I worked on a variety of projects relating to incoming regulations, risk assessments, and more. I also worked at the University of Minnesota's Office of Sustainability both as a Resilience and Adaptation intern and a Climate Action Planning intern, introducing me to the world of decarbonization, risk analysis, and climate strategizing. My internship experience and classroom knowledge have allowed me to gain a diverse set of skills related to sustainability, and I look forward to continuing to expand my knowledge in the future.

Membership Services
CurrentI ensured exceptional customer service by greeting members and guests as they entered and exited the facility, engaging with members and guests and creating relationships with our clients. The Lake Forest Health and Fitness Center holds exceptionally high standards for staff, as member attraction and retention is one of our highest priorities. As the first face members and guests see as they walk into the center, it is important that I represent the club in a professional and positive light. During my time at the club, I have established a reputation for being thorough in all that I do. I answer questions and book appointments both in person and over the phone, often while multi-tasking with the busy front desk operations. I am comfortable using POS systems and Compete Software and adept at learning new computer systems for the job, as well as staying up to date with any new updates. Additionally, I am quick to lend my creative talents to create advertisement boards for pro shop sales, any special appointments, or just making a sign advertising new equipment. Global Environment, Health, And Safety Team; Environmental Sustainability Intern
12 week position with the GEHS team focusing on environmental sustainability within the company. In this role, I completed a variety of projects relating to sustainability. Some highlights from the summer include: - Successfully organizing, scheduling, and conducting 30 site interviews with all global manufacturing and R&D sites to standardize environmental metric collection data across AbbVie. This will allow for easier transitions within roles and expedite the auditing and assurances processes. - Researching incoming EU CSRD regulations and training AI to understand and draft policies relating to regulation in place of a consultant, saving the company an estimated $50,000. - Performing high level risk assessment for US based manufacturing sites relating to new drinking water PFAS regulations and researched remediation techniques, as well as completed high level risk assessments for water risk and biodiversity for sites globally. - Presenting sustainability communication and education for AbbVie employees, including a World Environment Day event where we tabled at 3 cafeterias across Lake County.
Climate Adaptation And Resilience Intern
After finishing up my work with the mitigation side of the Climate Action Plan, I transitioned over to working with the Resilience and Adaptation team. We met with numerous faculty, staff, and students to ensure that we were garnering feedback from our campus community as well as numerous subject matter experts to ensure that our goals were feasible. In addition to the Resilience Plan, I helped plan a Welcome Week event that reached over 5000 incoming freshman and transfer students. I helped organize student group, community groups, and even designed an "Amazing Race" type game centered around sustainability.
Ufleet Climate Action Planning Intern
I worked specifically with the UFleet to help plan and lead biweekly meetings with our working group as well as perform research to analyze the U's fleet, other college fleets, and sustainable fleets around the world to create the best plan of action for the unique challenges at the University of Minnesota Twin-Cities. I was given a large data set generated from a consultant and created an algorithm to find "best fit" replacements for ICE vehicles on campus. This involved taking into account carbon emissions, CapEx and OpEx, available infrastructure, and vehicle availability. This work allowed me to hone my data management and analysis skills pertaining to decarbonization.
