Kate Hoffman is the dynamic leader of Earn to Learn, the nation’s most innovative college-matched savings program for low-to moderate-income students.Kate founded the Tucson, Arizona-based 501(c)3 nonprofit in 2013 on a simple but powerful premise: earning a college education shouldn’t require students to go deeply into debt.Since then, Earn to Learn has helped make college a reality for thousands of underserved Arizona students who may have believed a degree was out of reach. The unique program combines matched-savings scholarships, financial education and academic coaching to help students attend and complete their college education. Nearly 2 out of 3 Earn to Learn students are the first in their family to attend college, and 83% are BIPOC. The best part: most Earn to Learn scholars graduate with little or no student-loan debt.Today, more than two-dozen states across the country are pursuing efforts to replicate the Earn to Learn model and make it available to students in their own communities. Federal leaders have also taken notice. In 2021, Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) and Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and Reps. David Schweikert (R-Ariz.) and Susie Lee (D-Nev.) introduced the bipartisan Earn to Learn Act in an effort to take this proven, pragmatic model to students nationwide. If approved, the legislation will create at least 250,000 additional scholarship opportunities over the course of five years. This means more opportunities for students to achieve their college dreams and the postsecondary education increasingly essential in the new economy.Earn to Learn is the product of Kate’s entrepreneurial spirit, love of community and financial services acumen. She serves on the board of directors for Greater Tucson Leadership; Child & Family Resources; and the Tucson Hispanic Chamber Foundation; and previously managed investment portfolios with Merrill Lynch and other firms.Kate’s work has garnered recognition from numerous state and local organizations.
